Quick answer
Nano Banana is the name of Google's Gemini image models, which create and edit images from a text prompt. The latest is Nano Banana 2.1 (gemini-nano-banana-2.1), released October 6, 2026. On the Gemini API it costs $0.0336 per 1K image, and Google recommends it in place of Nano Banana 2, which is now deprecated. Nano Banana Pro is the higher-priced tier, and Nano Banana 2 Lite matches 2.1's 1K price. YepShot's editor above runs Nano Banana 2.1, and new accounts get 18 free credits.

Which Nano Banana to use
- Most edits: Nano Banana 2.1
- The newest model: $0.0336 at 1K, $0.0504 at 2K and $0.113 at 4K, the lowest 2K and 4K prices in the family. It mixes up to 14 reference images and keeps up to 10 objects and 4 characters consistent. It is the model in YepShot's editor.
- Still on Nano Banana 2: switch
- Google has deprecated it and points to 2.1, which costs half as much at 1K and 2K. Input tokens cost three times as much on 2.1 and the 512px size is gone, so check those if you rely on them.
- Nano Banana Pro: the higher-priced tier
- $0.134 per 1K or 2K image and $0.24 at 4K, four times 2.1 at 1K. It keeps up to 6 objects and 5 characters consistent. We haven't tested it, and it isn't in YepShot's editor.
- Nano Banana 2 Lite and the original
- 2 Lite costs the same $0.0336 at 1K with a lower input price, and Google's pricing lists only a 1K price for it; we haven't tested it. The original Nano Banana is deprecated, and Google recommends moving to the 2 family.

Frequently asked questions
What is Nano Banana?
The name Google uses for its Gemini image models. They generate images from text and edit photos you upload: change a background, remove an object, rewrite text or combine several images, all described in plain language.
What is the latest version of Nano Banana?
Nano Banana 2.1, model ID gemini-nano-banana-2.1, released October 6, 2026. We update this page when Google releases a new version.
Why is it called Nano Banana?
It began as a placeholder codename. Google entered Gemini 2.5 Flash Image into LMArena's anonymous model comparisons under that name, the model became popular there, and Google kept the name for the product.
Is Nano Banana free?
Not on the API: Google lists no free tier for any of the five models. On YepShot, new accounts get 18 free credits, and a Nano Banana 2.1 edit costs 6 credits at 1K, enough for 3 edits.
What's the difference between Nano Banana Pro and Nano Banana 2.1?
Price and limits. Pro costs $0.134 per 1K image against $0.0336 for 2.1, and its input tokens cost $2.00 per million against $1.50. Pro keeps up to 6 objects and 5 characters consistent; 2.1 keeps up to 10 objects and 4 characters.
Is the original Nano Banana shutting down?
Google has deprecated gemini-2.5-flash-image and lists a shutdown date for it. Its docs recommend moving to the Nano Banana 2 family; of those, 2.1 and 2 Lite are the current ones.
Can I use Nano Banana without the API?
Yes. In YepShot's editor at the top of this page, upload a photo, describe the change and press Generate. An edit costs 6 credits at 1K, 7 at 2K and 15 at 4K; 4K needs a paid plan.
Is YepShot made by Google?
No. YepShot is an independent editor built on the Gemini API and is not affiliated with Google.
